Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) provides free LPG gas connections to adult women from poor households, replacing smoky firewood and cow-dung chulhas with clean cooking fuel. The scheme is run by the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas through the public oil marketing companies (Indane, Bharat Gas, HP Gas).
What You Get
- A free LPG connection in the name of the woman of the household, with the security deposit for the cylinder and regulator borne by the government.
- The first refill and the stove are also provided free under the Ujjwala 2.0 expansion.
- Ujjwala beneficiaries receive a targeted subsidy per refill credited directly to their bank account (the subsidy amount and number of eligible cylinders per year are notified by the government and revised from time to time).
Who Is Eligible?
- An adult woman (18 years or above) belonging to a poor household, with no existing LPG connection in the household.

- After verification, the distributor issues the connection and delivers the cylinder and stove.
Why This Scheme Matters
Household smoke from solid fuels is a major cause of respiratory illness among rural women and children. A clean LPG flame saves cooking time, protects health and removes the daily burden of collecting firewood.
